Food & Beverage Service Jobs in Kenya
What the work involves on the Kenyan Coast, what employers look for, and the roles open right now.
Food and beverage service is the largest single category of hospitality hiring on the Kenyan Coast, and the one where turnover is highest. It covers waiting staff, bartenders, baristas, restaurant hosts, banqueting crew, captains and supervisors, up to restaurant manager and food and beverage manager.
Coast properties run several outlets at once: a main restaurant, a beach bar or grill, room service, and conference or wedding banqueting. The work varies more than the job title suggests. A waiter at an all-inclusive resort in Diani serves a different guest, at a different pace, from one in a fine-dining restaurant in Malindi town.
Employers here ask for three things. Spoken English matters most, because guests are largely international and a server who cannot hold a conversation cannot upsell or handle a complaint. Experience in a busy outlet counts for more than certificates. Availability matters too: properties staffing up for the December to March peak need people who can start within a fortnight.
Entry-level roles suit someone with a hospitality certificate and a season or two behind them, casual work included. Supervisory roles generally need three to five years with time as a captain or shift leader. Food and beverage manager positions expect P&L responsibility, stock control and having run a team of twenty or more.
Demand concentrates in Diani and Ukunda, Watamu and Malindi, Mtwapa and the Nyali–Bamburi strip in Mombasa. Hiring swells before the December and July peaks and thins through the long rains in May and June. Those quiet months are the time to be in a talent pool rather than watching job boards.

Questions About Food & Beverage Service Work
-
What qualifications do I need for a waiter job in Kenya?
Most Coast employers ask for a certificate in food and beverage service or hospitality from a recognised college, plus at least one season of real outlet experience. Spoken English matters as much as the certificate, since guests are largely international.
-
Is restaurant work on the Coast seasonal?
Much of it is. Properties in Diani, Watamu and Malindi hire heavily before the December to March and July to September peaks, and run leaner through the long rains. Permanent positions exist at every level, but casual and seasonal contracts are common at entry level.
-
Do I have to pay to apply for a food and beverage job?
No. REI Hospitality never charges candidates to apply, to register or to be placed. Employers pay our fees. If anyone asks you for money in our name, please report it to us.
