Front Office Jobs in Kenya
What the work involves on the Kenyan Coast, what employers look for, and the roles open right now.
Front office is the guest's first and last impression of a property, which is why employers screen harder for manner than for paperwork. The category covers receptionists, front desk agents, reservations agents, night auditors, guest relations officers, concierge staff, front office supervisors and front office managers.
On the Coast the role goes well past check-in and check-out. Guests arrive from Moi International in Mombasa or the Malindi airstrip, often after long journeys, and front office handles transfers, excursion bookings, dive centre referrals and the constant practical questions that come with an unfamiliar country. The best agents know the area as well as they know the booking system.
Employers look for clear spoken and written English, composure under pressure, and accuracy. A booking error at a full property in December is a serious problem. Property management system experience often decides between two similar candidates, with Opera, Protel and eZee the systems most common in Kenyan properties. A second European language, particularly Italian or German, counts for a lot in Malindi and Watamu, where those markets are long established.
Entry-level reception roles suit someone with a front office or tourism certificate and a season of experience. Supervisory roles expect three or more years plus shift-leading and handling escalated complaints. Front office managers are expected to own the department, the rota and the upselling targets.
Night audit sits slightly apart. It is a specific skill, properties struggle to fill it, and anyone comfortable with the hours and the reconciliation has a reliable way into hospitality.

Questions About Front Office Work
-
What property management systems should a receptionist know?
Opera, Protel and eZee are the systems most commonly used in Kenyan Coast properties. Experience with any of them often decides between two similar candidates.
-
Does speaking Italian or German help in front office roles?
Considerably, in Malindi and Watamu. Both have long-established Italian and German visitor markets, and properties there will often favour a candidate with one of those languages.
-
Are night audit positions worth taking?
They are a reliable way in. Properties struggle to fill night audit, the reconciliation skills transfer well to accounts and revenue roles, and the experience counts toward front office supervision later.
