Housekeeping Jobs in Kenya
What the work involves on the Kenyan Coast, what employers look for, and the roles open right now.
Housekeeping is the department that most directly determines whether a guest leaves a good review, and it is consistently under-appreciated as a career path. The category covers room attendants, public area cleaners, laundry staff, linen room attendants, housekeeping supervisors and executive housekeepers.
The Coast adds complications. Salt air and humidity are hard on linen, furnishings and fabrics, so properties want staff who understand fabric care as well as cleaning. Beach properties deal with sand everywhere. Rooms are often thatched, open-sided or spread across garden cottages rather than stacked in a single block, which changes both the routine and the timing.
Employers look for consistency and stamina above all. A room attendant servicing fourteen to sixteen rooms a day at standard needs both. References are checked carefully, because housekeeping works unsupervised in rooms holding guests' belongings. Attention to detail, and the confidence to report a maintenance fault rather than work around it, separate good attendants from adequate ones.
Formal qualifications matter less here than a record you can check. Someone who has worked two seasons at a reputable property with good references will be considered ahead of a certificate holder with no experience.
Supervisory roles need three or more years plus room inspection experience and the ability to run a rota. Executive housekeeper positions expect stock and budget control, contract management for laundry and pest control, and responsibility for a team of thirty or more at a larger resort.
Housekeeping also has the clearest internal progression of any department on the Coast. Several of the executive housekeepers working in Diani and Watamu started as room attendants.

Questions About Housekeeping Work
-
Do I need a certificate to work in housekeeping?
Not usually. For room attendant and laundry positions, employers weigh a checkable record and solid references above formal qualifications. A housekeeping certificate helps for supervisory roles.
-
How many rooms does a room attendant service in a day?
Fourteen to sixteen is typical at Coast properties, though it varies with room size and whether the property uses garden cottages rather than a single block. Stamina and consistency matter more than speed alone.
-
Can housekeeping lead to a better position?
Yes, and it does regularly. Housekeeping has the clearest internal progression of any department on the Coast. Several executive housekeepers working in Diani and Watamu started as room attendants.
